Family-Based Immigration

Family reunification is a core principle of the U.S. immigration system, allowing U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders) to sponsor certain family members for immigration benefits. Through family-based immigration, eligible relatives can obtain lawful permanent residency and, eventually, U.S. citizenship.

Who Can Be Sponsored?

Immediate Relatives of U.S. Citizens

  • Spouse.
  • Unmarried children under 21.
  • Parents (if the petitioner is 21 or older).

Family Preference Categories

  • First Preference (F1): Unmarried adult children (21 or older) of U.S. citizens
  • Second Preference (F2A & F2B): Spouses, minor children, and unmarried adult children of lawful permanent residents
  • Third Preference (F3): Married children of U.S. citizens
  • Fourth Preference (F4): Siblings of U.S. citizens (if the petitioner is 21 or older)

Why Choose Family-Based Immigration?

  • Pathway to Citizenship: Eligible family members can apply for U.S. citizenship after fulfilling residency requirements.
  • Reuniting Families: This process helps families stay together and build a future in the U.S.
  • Work & Travel Benefits: Green card holders can work legally and travel internationally with fewer restrictions.
